Any recommendations or experience of using the inbuilt headphone amp in the M-DAC?

Looking for open back headphones for diverse music but a lot of classical.

I am intrigued by the Hifiman range (as a former owner of Magneplanar speakers which I think are based on similar transducers) but it seems that even the HE-500 really needs a dedicated headphone amp.

    Any advice/comments gratefully received.

    Planar magnetic

The planars have a sound like no other. If that's your goal then get a good amp with adequate power reserve.

You are spot on about the need for a dedicated headphone amp with the HifiMAN magnaplanars. They really need some power but the HE500 are lovely lovely cans. No experience with the Audiolab M-DAC though.
