I have an iPhone 4S and am wondering if I would notice an improvement in audio quality from using a headphone amp? And if so what can you recommend.

If you want to carry the amp around, or even use it as I do sometimes while listening in bed, then a FiiO E17 could be very handy. With that the size is the same as the iPhone and you can use a LOD cable to connect the iphone's dock to the E17's AUX input and go from there. You bypass the iphone's volume and some of the electronics that way, and since the amplification is better with the E17, you get cleaner sound with better dynamics.

But if you're looking for something bigger and better, have a look here:

Portable headphone amps are designed to give you a perfect output for your headphones - most portable devices are a little compromised in top volume to give more battery life. With an iPod - as Dale Thorn said - there is an advantage to using an LOD cable with an amp which definitely gives better sound than right out of the 3.5mm jack.

This little fella is very impressive too
