Basically what the title says. Using an amp would definitely use less battery on the MP3 player wouldn't it?

Yes, this is normally true.
Especially with headphones with higher impedance ratings the introduction of a portable amp reduces battery consumption on your iPod or MP3 player. With low impedance (easy to drive) in-ear headphones you will find less of a difference in battery life with the introduction of a portable amp.
