Default Sound quality

The Shure 840 does have a very good reputation. Each week when I visit the Apple store, I see the different headphones including the Beats, and many times I have picked up the Beats and thought "I should put these on and listen", and then I put them down and move on. I did have a chance to try a similar fashion headphone once, playing "Basin Street Blues" by Jimmy Smith, where there is a mass crescendo of horns in several places, and with the fashion headphone I tried I could scarcely believe how badly it was handled by that headphone. It sounded like someone crashing into a bunch of garbage cans in an alley, but covered by a large blanket.

So if you put your money into a good quality headphone such as the Shure, or some that I've had good results with, you will really appreciate the difference it makes with the better quality recordings.

Default Beats is best?

Beats make different models. Since they are different, only one could be the best, yes?

But what you might want to do before you spend a lot of money is listen to them compared to other well-known brands such as Grado, Sennheiser, AKG, Denon etc. Compared to some of the Denons for example, which are rated highly for a neutral high fidelity sound, the mid-priced Beats are way up in the bass and way down in the treble. Audiophiles and music lovers tend to prefer a flat, neutral sound, but Beats does not aim toward that audience.
