XBox 360 gaming headphones

Greetings! I'm looking for a set of gaming headphones to use when playing my XBox 360..

I want to ensure I get the best set fist time and so cost is not an option, also i do not need a built in mic.

When recommending can you also let me know the best way of connecting headphones to the XBox (i.e. through the rca or via the headphone socket on my home cinema unit - or another way....)

At the HiFi Headphones store we're just in the process of adding a selection of specialised gaming headphones (with and without mics) to our inventory. However, regular full sized Hi-Fi headphones would be equally as good if you do not require a microphone.

We can highly recommend either the well regarded Audio-Technica ATH-AD700 or the closed back Audio-Technica ATH-A700. The bass on both these headphones is well defined, without being boomy and the mid/high end detail is very good indeed. They are also very comfortable and lightweight, so ideal for long gaming sessions.

Also worth checking out is the Beyerdynamic DT770 (or the MMX300 - the same headphone with a very high quality mic). The bass response is powerful and positional accuracy is excellent, meaning you can hear when someone is creeping up behind you. These headphones are designed for studio engineers, so are built to last.

If the headphone output on your home cinema setup is good quality then that should be OK. Often the headphone output on AV equipment is a bit of an afterthought, and in this case improvements to the sound can be achieved by driving the headphones with a headphone amplifier and taking the audio signal directly from the RCA line level signal on the audio source.

Ill be looking for some headphones for my 360 as well, but would require the MIC built in for Xbox Live.

What sort of compatibility issues could I be looking at ? Xbox live headset plugs into the controller, and does the sound output and mic input through one audio jack.

I'm thinking Microsoft wouldn't want other makes of headset being used, so the gaming headphones with mic sold at Hifiheadphones are purely suited for PC use?

Hi James... welcome to the forum!

My understanding is that you can use any headset fitted with microphone on the Xbox 360 with the help of an adapter. It seems the Speedlink Xbox 360 Headset Adapter will do the trick.

We'll definitely look at stocking these adapters in the future.

Hi Shaun, thanks for the welcome. (Thanks for the info this morning on the phone about the UE Pro's ) Just had a look at that adapter, still dont know how it would work as I'd want it to;

So it does the 5.1 surround from the actual game sounds. 1 audio jack going to TV/Amp.
Also the sound from my chums on xbox live. 1 audio jack going to the controller.
And sound from my voice going down the Mic jack, into the controller.

I think the Speedlink adapter just allows you to use any headset with mic for chatting on xbox live, and not actually emitting the surround sound from the actual game aswell. Well that's the way i see it.

Unless, the talking from xbox live is changed from the headset to come out of the TV instead, then plug the main audio jack from new headphones into my amp, and the mic jack from headphones into the speedlink adaptor........ LOL..... I think that would work ? So the 5.1 in game sounds, and the xbox live people talking will come through the "TV" - (but headphones really)....

Yes, that last suggestion you made makes sense. It seems possible, but I'm afraid I don't have an Xbox to try this out.

You mention making the Xbox live chat output go through the main audio output. Is this a setting you can change on the Xbox?

Personally ive always used a set of AKG 240S cans with a JVC SU-DH1 surround sound processor and a penguin tin amp for gaming on both my 360 and ps3....

I'm looking at getting some gaming headphones for Christmas, but my main concern is that they can only be used with AV connections. I connect my 360 and PS3 to my TV using HDMI cables, and can't seem to find a simple way of connecting the headphones with HDMI.

I've been looking at some Turtle Beach PX21's. I've seen a video saying you can use them with HDMI, but it doesn't seem straightforward to me (maybe I'm just being stupid?).

Can somebody please advise if this is something that is possible and how it is done?

Also, recommendations on good headphones ranging from £40 to £70 welcome (compatible with 360 and PS3). :-)

I have the PX21's on my PS3 and they are powered by a USB to your console then using red & white AV to your TV (my PS3 is connected using HDMI)

I would recommend them as they do what they say on the tin!
