What is a DAC?

A Digital to Analogue Converter takes a pure digital audio feed (in this case from a computer) and converts it into an analogue signal that can be amplified.

Every computer soundcard with a headphone or line level output has a DAC onboard, but in many cases is very poor quality.  The iBasso D4 Mamba upgrades your portable audio system in one step.

The iBasso D4 Mamba combines a high quality DAC and headphone amplifier in one unit, giving you the ultimate portable audio setup.

Why use a headphone amp?

A headphone amplifier takes a line level signal and allows you to drive headphones with it.  Normally a line level signal would not be powerful enough to drive headphones without amplification.

You can use a headphone amplifier to drive your headphones from many audio sources, such as CD players and portable audio players like the iPod (dock connector cable required).

Avoid the iPod Headphone Jack

With the iBasso D4 there is no need to restrict yourself to listening through the standard noisy headphone output of your iPod or audio source.

The dock connector on the humble iPod includes a high quality line level output, meant for connecting the iPod to a HiFi via an iPod dock.  With a simple dock connector audio cable it's possible to feed a portable headphone amplifier with a clean line level audio signal, bypassing the headphone output completely.

A headphone amplifier like the iBasso D4 Mamba is needed to bring a line output to a level that can drive headphones.
