Wireless headphones and earphones normally transmit audio via a radio frequency (RF) signal, but can alternatively utilize infra red to carry the audio signal. Wireless headphones using an RF signal have a greater range (often upto 100m) than infrared headphones. Infra-red headphones must be within line of sight of the transmitting base station.

A wireless headphone system's base station can is normally located next to the audio source and can be connected with a HiFi system, TV, computer or a portable player such as the iPod.
