Full size hi-fi headphones, that can be of the 'around the ear' (circumaural) type or the 'on ear' (superaural) type. Full size headphones have larger cup-shaped earpieces with either open or closed backs. This type of headphone is often used for home TV, radio or Hi-Fi headphone listening. The two major types of full size headphones are closed back (also known as 'sealed' or 'enclosed') and open back. Closed back headphones do their best to isolate you from external noise with an enclosed chamber. Open back headphones on the other hand have earcups that are vented to the outside world amd are affected by ambient noise. Closed back headphones have the disadvantage that the sealed earcups can cause sonic reflections and resonances that impair the quality of the sound. Cheap, badly designed closed headphones can sound very peaky. Open back headphones have the obvious limitation of being affected by noisy environments, but as they are not affected by sound reflections from the earcups it's possible to design open back headphones that sound significantly better than closed back designs.
