I've been using a Sennheiser DAC paired with a Sennheiser headset for around seven years, so replacing a setup I'd become completely accustomed to wasn't something I expected to happen overnight.
My first impression was the weight, and during the first few hours I was very aware of it. The clamp force is also quite firm when new, particularly around the jaw and temples, so don't be surprised if it feels tight initially. Give yourself a few days to adjust before making a judgement.
Where these headphones really won me over was the sound.
Initially I found myself chasing the punchier presentation I was used to from my old Sennheiser, experimenting with Dolby Atmos and the various EQ presets. After spending time listening rather than constantly changing settings, I settled on leaving Dolby Atmos enabled with its additional Intelligent EQ disabled, using the default Audeze tuning instead.
That's when the Maxwell really started to shine.
The level of detail is exceptional. Rather than simply hearing a guitar, I could hear individual strings being plucked, subtle backing instruments I'd previously glossed over, and a level of separation that made familiar songs sound fresh again. It's the first headset I've owned where I found myself listening into the music rather than simply listening to it.
I've tried wireless several times over the last eight years with headsets from SteelSeries, Corsair and Sennheiser, but every time I found myself going back to a wired DAC because I missed the sound quality. I hated giving up the convenience of wireless, but the audio always felt like a compromise. This is the first headset that's broken that cycle. For the first time, I don't feel like I'm sacrificing sound quality to cut the cable.
